$100mn Insurance Cover for the Indian GP

Insurance cover of $100 million (around Rs 490 crore) for the event is set.

The total cover includes two policies: the first is a $15 million event cancellation policy mainly covering for loss of revenue on account of cancellation of the event due to reasons beyond the control of the organisers. HDFC Ergo is likely to underwrite this.

The second policy, to be provided by Reliance General Insurance Company, is a $85 million terrorism and third-party liability cover. Apart from any terrorist activity, it covers third-party liability risks like personal accident covers for ground crews, instruments of the organizers and property damages.

Roughly 70 per cent of the risk has been re-insured to global reinsurance majors. ACE Insurance Brokers Ltd advised on the reinsurance deal.

The total premiums were expected to be in the region of Rs 7-10 crore. The General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) was ceded 10 per cent of the risk. Twenty per cent of the risk would be retained by the insurers while the remaining would be reinsured by the global players.

Since the instruments, cars and drivers are already covered under the annual global policy by respective team owners, the total coverage for the racing extravaganza is lower than other marquee sports events in India like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. While the World Cup 2011 took a cover of Rs 600 crore, the total sum insured for IPL-4 was around Rs 900 crore, which included a Rs 450 crore cover against terrorist attacks.

TRP and Advertisers:

The target group is the 15- 24-year-old and the TRPs for a F1 race is between 6 and 8.

The low TRPs mean that there would a "lot less money involved when it comes to advertising" and more "below the line marketing for the event". "India feed is only about 600 seconds and a good part of that will be retained by ESPN for pricing it at a premium closer to the event."

The price of a 10 second ad is roughly Rs 1-1.5 lakh, nearly half the price commanded by ESPN-Star, broadcaster for Indian-England ODI Series. But for the peak matches However, unlike cricket, the duration of advertising is limited since there are no ads in the middle of the race.

Moreover, ESPN Star Sports, the TV rights-holder of the Airtel Indian Grand Prix, has been unable to get premium rates for on-air advertising, signaling that advertisers continue to skip non-cricket sporting events on TV.

The channel is expected to garner only R5-6 crore in advertising revenue from the 3-day event, people familiar with media buying agencies said. UB Group, Vodafone Essar, Samsung India, Sony India and Perfetti Van Melle, associate sponsors for the event, have bought 90-300 seconds of airtime on the channel per day.
